The Virginia Intermont theatre department presents the classic 1960’s Broadway musical “Sweet Charity“ with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon. “Sweet Charity“ premiered on Broadway in 1966 and was nominated for 12 Tony awards and won the Tony for Best Choreography. It also ran in London’s West End, has enjoyed revivals and international productions winning numerous awards, and was adapted into film in 1969. Featuring Bob Fosse dance moves and hits such as “Hey Big Spender” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now” this musical was the star vehicle for iconic powerhouses Gwen Verdon (Broadway) and Shirley MacLaine (film). The play is a musical fable that centers on New York City taxi dancer Charity Hope Valentine and her unwavering desire to find true love. Despite living in an indifferent world that keeps dishing out hard knocks, Charity continues to practice the art of giving, loving, and remaining ever hopeful.
