Virginia Intermont College mourns the loss of Mary Coomer Davis, a 1947 graduate who devoted exemplary service to the College and the Bristol community. She died Oct. 26 in Bristol.
Upon graduation from VI, Davis served as a class agent and became a member of the Alumni Board and the Board of Trustees. Because of her leadership and loyal support, the Mary Davis Room was named in her honor in West Hall and is frequently used for luncheons and small conferences. Nearly a decade ago, Davis helped spearhead fundraising efforts to establish an Alumni House at 808 Moore Street. The house was renovated in 2005 and named the Van Dyke–Davis Alumni House in honor of Davis and alumna Mary Van Dyke ’45.
In 2009, Davis received Virginia Intermont’s “Distinguished Alumni Award.”
In a professional career that began while she was still a student at Virginia Intermont, Davis became one of the first women to work as a licensed insurance agent in Bristol and later founded her own insurance agency. Her career spanned more than 50 years. Davis was also active in First Baptist Church and many community organizations in Bristol.
“Mary Davis loved VI, and she remained active with the College community through her last years,” said President E. Clorisa Phillips. “She leaves a legacy of caring, giving and serving both in non-profit and local business. She will be remembered not only for her philanthropic service but truly as a fixture in the history of Virginia Intermont.”
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Read the full obituary online here.
